Revocable Living Trusts
A living trust is a legal document in which your assets are placed, administered for your benefit during your life and then later transferred to your beneficiaries after your death.
In most living trusts, the person creating the trust names him or her self as the trustee, allowing him or her to revoke the trust, change its terms and manage the property in the trust. He or she will also name a successor trustee who will take over as trustee if he or she becomes incapacitated and when he or she dies. The successor trustee will then distribute your assets to your beneficiaries.
In addition, a revocable living trust will allow for the smooth transfer of assets after you die with little probate court involvement. This is important, because probate can be a costly, public process that is devastating to family members who are already grieving your passing.
